Your Child's Success In School and Beyond

Your Child's Success In School and Beyond –

Planning Vacations and Family Trips

As we put a close on the 2013-14 school year, and plan for the 2014-2015 school year, please be mindful that in 2014-15 our school district will be fully implementing the Common Core State Standards, a rigorous set of standards designed to ensure that all students are successful participants in the world of the 21st Century. The Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Because of this shift in education, it is more important than ever that students be physically present in the classroom for instruction. Classroom instruction supports inquiry and discovery, reliance on multiple resources, and continuous assessment. Much of the work focuses on students applying concepts to real world situations. The learning is active and interactive. When students are absent, they miss significant learning opportunities that cannot be "covered" through packet work.

Please be mindful of this when planning trips during the school year. Time spent away from the classroom will significantly impact your student’s progress and academic achievement. That is time and experience they can ill afford to lose.

The standards were drafted by experts and teachers from across the country and are designed to ensure students are prepared for today’s entry-level careers, freshman-level college courses, and workforce training programs. The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful. (What Parents Should Know About Common Core State Standards)

The new standards also provide a way for teachers to measure student progress throughout the school year and ensure that students are on the pathway to success in their academic careers.

As you plan vacations and trips, please refer to the district's instructional calendar.

Have a wonderful summer!

Principal's Message

In the sweetness of friendship; let there be laughter and the sharing of pleasures. For in the dew

of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

Khalil Gibran

June 6, 2014

Dear Bollinger Community,

It is time to gear up for goodbyes as some of our dearest friends move on to the next stage of

their lives at Iron Horse Middle School, or wherever their paths may take them. Today was an

amazing day with Lunch on the Green and an opportunity to say thank you to all of our families

and this outstanding community.

I have a few special thank “you’s” as we wrap up this year.

To all of the families that are leaving us that have volunteered so graciously in donations

of time, energy, and financial support, you will be missed.

To the boy scouts and girl scouts who raised our flags at each monthly community flag

salute; thank you for your heartfelt patriotism and support of Bulldog Pride.

To more of our scouts and their families who helped plant, clean up, and beautify our

To all members of PTA, Ed Fund, and Site Council, who have dedicated hours of time,

sharing their passion and devotion towards making Bollinger the outstanding school it is

and clearly saying that our children matter.

To the outstanding staff, certificated and classified, who have chosen this profession for

the love of children.

And, to our children – thank you for bringing a smile to my face every single day.

And, most of all I want to thank Bobbie Skelton for her years of service and dedication to the

children of Bollinger and wish her a very fond farewell as she retires and enters into an exciting

new stage of her life.

Many of you ask what you can do for your children during the summer. Here are a few ideas.

Visit your library, join in their summer activities, read to your children and let them read to you.

Have them journal their summer adventures to practice their writing skills. In particular, have

them focus on one small moment and what makes that moment special. If you have iPads or

iPods, have them read and record books or their own writing and have them read it again and

again, and practice “fluency” and “voice.” If it’s available have them practice Raz Kids or IXL

Math. These are all fun ways to stay active and busy and not realize that they are doing that

dreadful “e” word which is something “educational.”

I asked our district facilities personnel about work on our school gates and fences and received

this update this week. The following work is scheduled between June 16, 2014 and June 27,

1. Install closers and expanded metal panels at 7 gates

2. Install pedestrian and vehicular gates at Fire Road near Kid’s Country building

Once this work is completed we will review next steps with respect to additional changes with

our fences, gates, and hopefully additional parking in the area in front of the 600 wing next to the

Although this is the last formal Newsletter for this year, there will be much more information

coming out in the next few weeks through Constant Contact and School Messenger, and look for

our newest communication system called Peachjar that will contain all of our school flyers in the

very near future. (One more process for us to learn but aiming for paperless communication.)

There will be many more “thank yous” and last minute reminders as we prepare for next year. I

look forward to seeing many of you next week and will have the Kleenex handy as we say

goodbye to another school year and some dear friends.

Our bell schedule for the last day of school is

Kinder 8:15 – 11:38

Grades 1 – 5 8:30 – 12:08

SDC Grades K – 5 8:15 – 11:50

Yours truly,
