BREAKFAST BOOK CLUB
The goal of this committee is to foster a love for reading.  The Breakfast Book Club has garnered incredible support in the past.  One Wednesday each month, students meet at the crack of dawn in the multipurpose room for donuts and juice.  They then divide into groups by age and read together pre-selected books and create a related arts and crafts project.  The committee also provides each child with a book of their choice during their Birthday Month.  Volunteers are needed to help before school at book club meetings, read aloud at Family Reading events, write and distribute notices for birthday books, help plan and publicize events. The committee welcomes parents with knew ideas and – of course – a love of reading.

COMMUNITY AWARENESS
This group of parents meets throughout the year to plan and organize activities that encourage students and their families to reach out to the community at large.  Past projects have included the Adopt a Family Holiday Project, Books for the Barrios, Hunger Awareness Project and a book drive for an elementary school on Richmond.  We need your help to make our community and the world at large a better place for everyone, especially the disadvantaged.

F.A.M.E.
The Fine Arts Mini Experience is a fun and exciting parent run program that introduces our students to classics in ART and MUSIC.  Parents put on a mini-play of sorts several times a year to expose students to the works and methodologies of chosen artists and musicians.  While no experience (or talent for that matter) is required, parents do meet to practice the presentation/play, gather necessary props, and hone in on the key messages to be conveyed about the profiles artists.  In the past, parents have worked in pairs and have performed inside the classrooms.  This year, our goal is to expand the scope and depth of our presentations and make use of the Multi Purpose room to bring to artists and musicians alive in an exciting performance – with the entire school as our audience.

HEAD ROOM PARENT
Room Parents are a vital part of volunteerism at Bollinger Canyon.  They provide an irreplaceable link between the teachers and the parent community.  Room Parents work with the teachers to plan classroom parties, organize volunteers for field trips, and coordinate teacher appreciation activities.  Room parents are often frequently asked by their teachers to assist with classroom activities and projects (e.g. school auction item, carnival booth).  Responsibilities vary from teacher to teacher.  One Head Room Parent and several assistant Room Parents are usually selected for each class.

HEALTH & SAFETY COMMITTEE
The goal of this committee is to ensure the health and well-bring of the students while on the Bollinger Canyon campus.  Volunteers are needed to fill an increasing number of vital responsibilities – Traffic Patrol, Lunchroom helpers, Noon Duty/Playground Helpers, Red Ribbon Week, Vision and Hearing Screening.  With the around the clock construction schedule during the coming school year, we anticipate additional health and safety concerns that this committee will need to address.  If you have any time to volunteer, please consider committing time to this committee.

TRAFFIC PATROL
Parent volunteers are needed for both early bird and late bird curbside drop off and pick up.  Four shifts working from 8:15-8:35, 9:05-9:25, 2:00-2:20, and 3:00 to 3:20 ensure that students are dropped off and picked up safely and that parents adhere to all traffic flow rules and regulations.

LUNCH ROOM HELPERS
Parents manage/assist the students during the lunch shifts.  Assistance may range from opening juice boxes to locate missing lunches.

NOON DUTY/PLAYGROUND
Parents manage and assist students during outdoor recess.  This is a truly great way to connect with students as they express themselves in choosing what to play, who to play with.  It’s also an excuse to revisit your childhood and freely climb on the monkey bars, play dodge ball and romp around on the play structure.  Parents will frequently be called upon to manage typical playground conflicts and disputes.

RED RIBBON WEEK
Bollinger Canyon actively participates in this national campaign to unite schools and communities in an effort to create a drug-free America.  Usually held in October, volunteers help by tying red ribbons throughout the campus, distributing red ribbons for the students to wear, and planning other age appropriate activities and events.                            Back to Top

VISION AND HEARING SCREENING
San Ramon Valley School District screens all teacher referred students and all students in Kindergarten, second and fifth grade for hearing and vision problems.  Parents are needed to assist the Audiologist and Optometrist and to escort students to and from their classrooms.  Testing is usually accomplished in a three day time frame limiting the time for this commitment to three days.

PRIMO’S RUN COMMITTEE
This county wide event is a fun way to volunteer that literally takes less than one day of your time.  Each fall, the San Ramon Valley Education Fund hosts “Primo’s Race for Education,” which actually consists of three events” -- a Half Marathon, 10K run and 5K Family Run/Walk run.  The goal is simply to raise much needed funds for our school district.  This committee organizes ten person teams called “centipedes” to walk/run together.  Many teams dress in costume or create a fun theme to spotlight their group.  Your help is needed with registration, parking, start/finish line coordinators and more.  Your participation will make a great difference for our school for we stand to receive $35 for every ten adult volunteers we provide on race day and a monetary bonus (in past years it was $500) if the number of racers who register from our school exceeds ten percent of our total school population.

PUBLICITY/MARQUEE
The key aim of this organization is to promote the good name and excellent programming at Bollinger Canyon in the community at large.  An obvious venue for publicity is the local newspapers, education journals, etc.  However, the committee also strives to keep the community apprised of upcoming events via the school marquee.  This year, the publicity committee will also plan and promote school spirit activities here at Bollinger.

“REFLECTIONS” COMMITTEE
“Reflections” is a National PTA program that attempts to celebrate the creative, artistic talent of our students.  Many, many students do not excel in traditional math and science subjects but show extraordinary talent and skill when it comes to self expression and art.  This program rewards such achievement.  Each year a theme is chosen and students submit entries in one of five categories – Art, Music, Photography, and Literature.  Volunteers are needed to help publicize the contest, answer inquiries about contest rules, and encourage participation.  All entries are acknowledged and additional volunteer effort is needed to prepare ribbons and certificates for participants.

SPECIAL NEEDS COMMITTEE
There is no set definition for students with special needs.  Often included in the group are those students with identified learning differences, such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, etc.  The goal of this committee is to ensure that parents of these students gain additional support from PTA’s wealth of resources.  The committee strives to provide educational speakers and hosts informal gatherings to discuss issues of interest to parents seeking to obtain an optimum learning experience for their special needs students.

VOLUNTEER CENTER COMMITTEE
This committee provides enormous support to classroom teachers by helping with prep work for the various learning exercises.  Photocopying, gluing, tracing, cutting and collating are among the tasks committee members perform, thereby freeing up teachers and aides for more instruction time.  Most of the projects can be done on your own time schedule and in the comforts of your own home.  Volunteer time just couldn’t be more flexible.

YEARBOOK COMMITTEE
Without a doubt, one of the highlights at the end of the school year is the presentation of the annual school yearbook.  The joy and glee on faces as students turn page after page looking for their faces and the faces of friends and classmates.  So much work goes into making that one day special.  It starts with volunteer parents who serve as classroom photographers.  These volunteers need to make sure that their class has enough quality photographs of each student for the yearbook.  The yearbook committee also needs volunteers to capture on print all of the Bollinger Canyon special events (Halloween parade, plays, Carnival, etc.).  Finally, committee members also work to create colorful and unique layout pages.  Special care is taken to make sure that each and every Bollinger Canyon student is featured in the yearbook.  This is the first year the Yearbook Committee is considering use to digital images which has been shown to produce a higher quality, more affordable yearbook.

BOLLINGER CANYON EDUCATION FUND
BCEF, an affiliate of the San Ramon Valley Education Fund, is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds to maintain and enhance the quality of education at Bollinger Canyon.  PTA programs, by charter, cannot be exclusively fundraising organizations and in fact, must offer 3 parent education programs for each fundraiser PTA sponsors.  Thus, the institution of Ed Funds has developed throughout school districts nationwide to fill the gap in school funding left by recent budget cuts.  In past years, the funds work has been so successful that they have raised well over $50,000 annually to support extra curricular programs and teaching para-professionals school budgets would not otherwise allow.

Volunteers are needed to assist with BCEF’s fundraisers – ESCRIP, the Spring Auction, Matching Corporate Grants and Gift Wrapping Sales.
