SUPPORT PERSONNEL/PROGRAMS
Resource Specialist
A Resource Specialist will be available to assist students with exceptional learning needs. This specialist will observe students, diagnose difficulties, and coordinate referrals for special student assistance. This person will assist the classroom teacher in modifying the classroom curriculum to meet the needs of special students. The Resource Specialist will work with students on one-to-one and small group basis when such instruction seems advisable.
Speech and Language
Specialist
Speech and language therapy is provided at Bollinger Canyon School for children who have difficulty with verbal communication. Following an evaluation and notification of parents, students are enrolled in individual or small groups for therapy.
Health Educator
We will have the service of a health educator for one half day per week. The schedule will be posted. The duties of the health educator include the following:
1. Handle emergency cases where seriousness warrants.
2. Assist in improving health education at all grade levels.
3. Work with teachers to discuss health problems and assist teachers to help children with health problems.
4. Make home contacts when the situation warrants.
5. Provide hearing and vision screening for designated students.
Psychologist
Psychological services are provided to the students at Bollinger Canyon School by a school psychologist provided by the District one day per week. Services are provided directly to students through individual or small group counseling and psychological testing as a result of school IEP or SST decisions or by parent referral.
Student Support Team
A Student Support Team (SST) that includes the principal, a teacher and support personnel meets once a week to discuss teacher and/or parent referrals of students having difficulty at school for any number of reasons. The parents are invited to help look at the situation and develop an action plan that may include modifications or outside resources.
Gifted and Talented (G.A.T.E.)
The Gifted and Talented Education Program is consciously integrated into the regular classroom. The more capable students are “clustered” in reading and math groups with more emphasis at grades 3 – 5. Theses students are being challenged through appropriate enrichment and higher critical thinking activities. Leadership roles are encouraged when appropriate in the classroom and in Student Council activities. A school/parent G.A.T.E. Advisory Committee helps organize our endeavors. There is a parent meeting in the fall to outline opportunities for the year.
Library
An integral part of our school is the library. The library is staffed by a part-time library assistant (funded partially by the district and partially by the BCEF) and by parent volunteers. Students go to the library weekly and have an opportunity to select from a wide variety of books. Students are encouraged to bring home their selections to share with you. Any help you can provide in the care and return of materials will be appreciated. Reference books and encyclopedias may not be taken home. We also have many titles
for parents and would be
pleased to have you use them.
